The Spa Retreat ProjectLuxury Spa Area & Outdoor Living Design in Christchurch
Some landscaping projects are designed to solve a problem. Others are created to change how a home is experienced. For these Christchurch homeowners, the vision was to transform an overlooked corner of the garden into a private spa retreat - one that felt seamlessly connected to the home while offering a space to unwind throughout the year. What was once an uninspiring area has become one of the family's favourite places to spend time. Transforming an Underused Corner of the Garden Although the spa was already in place, the surrounding landscape never felt complete. Concrete pavers regularly carried dirt and sand into the water, while the space lacked the warmth and visual appeal the homeowners wanted, especially given its prominent position beside the kitchen and living areas. "I wanted to create a space for our spa that was relaxing and functional, but also beautiful to look at, given it's only metres away from the kitchen and living area." Rather than making small cosmetic improvements, Sculptural Landscapes reimagined the entire setting - creating a purpose-built outdoor environment that combines natural materials, practical features, and timeless design. Every Detail Designed With Purpose The completed landscape centres around a striking floating curved timber deck, bordered by corten steel edging that mirrors the adjacent pathway and introduces subtle architectural contrast. Around the spa, a series of handcrafted additions make the space both intuitive and enjoyable to use. A custom-built seat provides effortless access into the spa, while an outdoor shower has become a favourite feature after both spa sessions and summer days outside. Vertical reclaimed railway sleepers fitted with robe and towel hooks keep everything close at hand, and a bespoke planter box provides fresh herbs just steps from the kitchen. Together, these elements create an outdoor space that feels refined without losing its natural character. "I love the whole project. I love the floating curvy deck with corten steel edge that matches the path underneath." "The kids love the shower for the hot and cold thing, and I love the organic rustic look of it all." |

Designed for Real Life
The biggest success of the project isn't measured by how it looks - it's how often it's used.
What was previously an awkward part of the garden has become a regular destination for the family, whether it's relaxing after work, spending time together, or enjoying a quiet evening under the stars. Simple improvements, like easier access to the spa and integrated storage for robes and towels, have turned everyday routines into something genuinely enjoyable.
"We use the area several times a week. Getting in and out of the spa is so easy and it's become a regular ritual."
Why They Returned to Sculptural Landscapes
Having completed two previous landscaping projects for the homeowners, Sculptural Landscapes had already earned their confidence through quality workmanship and attention to detail. That trust continued throughout construction, with regular updates and collaborative communication ensuring decisions could be made quickly - even while the homeowners were at work.
"Sculptural Landscapes had done a great job on two previous projects, and I knew the quality of their work was exceptional."
"I loved Kristen texting me photos while she was onsite whenever there were decisions to make, as I couldn't be there."
Built to Last, Crafted to Belong
From the custom timber joinery and corten steel detailing to the carefully selected materials and finishing touches, every component was designed to feel like a natural extension of the home rather than an afterthought. The combination of handcrafted features and restrained planting creates a space that is both practical and visually calming, with a timeless quality that will continue to mature beautifully over the years.
More Than a Spa Area
This project demonstrates how considered landscape design can completely reshape the experience of a home.
Instead of simply upgrading the surroundings of an existing spa, Sculptural Landscapes created a destination that encourages people to slow down, spend time outdoors, and make the most of every season. It's a space that's as enjoyable to look at from inside the home as it is to spend time in.
Would They Recommend Sculptural Landscapes?
"Absolutely. Sculptural Landscapes do everything to an incredibly high standard, and I love their aesthetic."
